the valley suffered huge floods and the project is all but abandoned. following the winter rains of 2010 the river became lively and you get some idea on the accompanying video El chorro bed and breakfast The Camino del Rey, started in 1901 and finished in 1905, is the walkway that clings to the rock face and travels through from the North to the South side of the Gorge known as La Garguanta. The walkway is only one meter wide and in place rises 200 meters above the valley floor. It was originally built to transport materials to construct the hidro electric plant on the North side of the gorge. the area suffered sever flooding and now the hydro project is mostly abandoned. The accompanying video after the rains of 2010 give some idea of the force of the water

The walkway offered fantastic views of the el Chorro gorge but, the path became dangerous with several people falling to their deaths. After accidents in 1999 and 2000 in which four people died, the local authorities closed the pathway.. This doesnīt stop the intrepid still walking along what remains of the path. Most have the sense to use ropes which clip to the wire at the side of the path but, there is still the odd maniac that attempts it "rope free" Presumably they have no idea that the problem is bio degraded concrete, which will give them no warning at all as they fall through it in a shower of dust to hit the rocks below. Take a look at the video

And, if the crumbling walkway does not get you, then there is always the guardia civil hiding behind one of the tunnels, waiting to finish you off with a hefty fine for trying to get on to El Camino.

The good news is that the ayuntamiento have, after years of being lobbied, finally set aside the money, variously reported as being between 300,000 and 7 million euros, to restore the pathway. Donīt hold your breath though it is probably going to be five years before the work is complete.
